Hello, CopyNighters!

We’re going to do something a bit different, just for this month. Katie Filbert, through her involvement with Wikimedia especially here in DC, has been working on the LibLab project (http://wikidc.org/wiki/LibLab) at the DC’s MLK Jr. Public Library. She has invited us to check out the space and the project.

Ella’s Wood Fired Pizza (http://www.ellaspizza.com/) is right nearby and both are easy walking distance from the Metro. We’ll gather at Ella’s at the usual time for food, drinks and an abbreviated version of the usual discussion and then make our way from there to the library.

Please reply directly back to me or indicate you’ll be attending on Facebook so I can get a rough head count to call ahead.

CopyNight this month returns to our usual venue, Teaism, near the Gallery Place and Archives Metro stations. We also return to the usual discussion format after a couple of months of guest speakers.

I will try to bring a handful of stories for discussion but as always feel free to bring any news or copyright related topics you’d like to share.

CopyNight DC for July will be on our usual night, the 4th Tuesday of the month, which lands this month on the 26th.

We will be hosted once again by New America (my employer) who will also be supplying refreshments. Please RSVP on the blog, via email or the Facebook event between now and Friday so I can get a rough headcount for planning.

There will be a guest speaker this month, Carl Malamud of Public.Resource.org. Since Carl last spoke at CopyNight DC he has been hard at work on a variety of projects, the most recent being What Would Luther Burbank Do? (http://www.wwlbd.org/) Undoubtedly he will have
plenty to share and will be up for answering folks’ questions about his public domain advocacy in general.

Hello CopyNighters,

We’re changing things up a little bit this month. First, our guest this time will be Andrew Mirsky. Andrew is a lawyer working in the area of intellectual property who will share some of his relevant work and participate in a Q&A before we turn over the evening to our usual, broad ranging discussion.

Second, we will be hosted by New America (my employer) rather than meeting at our usual venue. I will be working to have the usual refreshments on hand that we enjoy when we have a host, to make the meeting easier on those coming straight from work. Hello CopyNighters!

CopyNight this month will be at our usual time and place. There is no
set topic or guest this month but there are certainly tons of stories in
the news worth discussing. The report for the White House IP Czar is
certainly getting a lot of attention. Speaking of reports, there are a
couple news ones out on either said of the argument though the
anti-piracy one in Australia is getting as much attention for its
questionable authorship. Following news of Chris Dodd revolving out to
the MPAA, former FCC Chair Michael Powell is headed to a cable industry
lobbying group. And there is no lack of frivolous stories like the James
Joyce estate issuing a complaint against Craig Ventner for inscribing a
quote on some DNA.

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable break over the holidays. I hope you are ready and eager to re-join the CopyNight discussion at our usual time and place.

There are many topics we can discuss like the move from three strikes as a counter to piracy to domain seizures and web site take downs, the next bit of copyright policy laundering that may take place in the TPP free trade agreement, and more. Also, I attended PK’s World’s Fair Use Day and would be happy to recap the event for anyone who wasn’t there.
